A used car can look affordable when only the listing price or payment is visible. Before contacting the seller, estimate the full cost you would need to pay or finance.

- Compare the out-the-door estimate with your cash budget or loan prequalification before you start negotiating.
- Check the total interest and loan term, not just the monthly payment.
2. Compare The Price With Similar Cars
A fair offer starts with comparable listings and condition, not only the seller's asking price. Look for similar year, make, model, trim, mileage, title status, and ownership type.
- Save a few comparable listings so you can explain your offer with evidence.
- Separate condition concerns from negotiation pressure. Repair estimates and worn tires are stronger evidence than a vague feeling that the price is high.
